I’m a big believer in the power of vision boards and starting the new year with soulful intentions. I create a personal and a business one at the start of each year and find it really helps to combat that back-to-work dread!
Dreaming big and allowing yourself to tune into what you’d like to do or be this year before diving into all those usual working tasks starts the year off in a positive and mindful way.
There are many reasons why vision boards work but in a nutshell, visualising is very powerful. Having that daily reminder of your vision is a great motivator that encourages you to really refine how you spend your time and energy with focus. Vision boards tune into your subconscious, creative brain and those inner dreams that you are quashing. They bring out that intuitive, inner voice that you may be currently ignoring or struggling to listen to.
If you’ve not done a vision board before then here is a quick guide to how to do one for your business or life…
1. Allow yourself a day or morning free from distractions
Prepare your space so you feel relaxed, comfortable and positive.
This activity is often stronger when done together so you could invite a few friends round too. I put on a virtual fireplace in the background, sit on my yellow rug, burn a nice soy candle and have chai tea and healthy snacks to hand!
2. Get together a selection of material.
Collect magazines or ask friends and family to donate them to you. You could also ask if any newsagents are getting rid of magazines. If you prefer, you can also do this digitally and head over to Pinterest, Google images or a stock site like Unsplash.
Once you’ve got your material read then grab some scissors, glue and something to stick your vision board on. I find the back of a frame works well or an A3 piece of card. You can cut up old packaging that you may have in your recycling to stick your images on.
Then, take a moment to reflect on where you are and how you feel and then think about how you’d like that to change. Close your eyes and allow yourself 5-10 minutes of space to let your mind wander and imagine your dream day, dream business and dream year.

3. START TO COLLECT IMAGERY & PHRASES
Cut out, pin or save any words, images or phrases that really resonate with you. This is the time to think big, tune into your subconscious and go with your gut. You may not know why you’ve cut out that picture of a sunflower, but don’t worry there will be a message or reason behind it.
Focus on how you want to feel, don’t get too bogged down in the details. I put ‘Rishikesh India’ on my vision board last year, which was probably a bit too literal as I didn’t end up going and felt a twinge of failure that I hadn’t, when really it probably wasn’t the right time for me. Whilst it’s good to have goals, having too rigid an idea means you tune out to the natural flow and opportunities that are presented to you as you are too focused on concrete goals.
4. Laying out your vision
Once you’ve collected enough imagery, start to lay it out on a piece of cardboard or paper. I use the back of a picture frame so I can have my board framed in my room each year. If you’re doing this on your computer then use your favourite software to layout imagery. Go through and see if there is anything missing or if anything doesn’t feel quite right. This is the part where you start to consolidate your business dreams and again go with your gut!
Don’t be afraid to get rid of items or go back and find something that works better. When you put it all together you may find it doesn’t quite feel right, and if so keep going and finding better images! You can see in the video below how I refine mine as elements don’t work or feel a little ‘off’ when I’m thinking of my year vision.
Keep it simple, make sure everything on there speaks to you and there is a good mixture of imagery and words.
5. reflect on your vision
If you are doing the activity with friends then it’s nice to chat through why you’ve chosen each image or phrase and what they mean to you. Speaking our intentions makes them more powerful and telling others means we have people who can support our vision and know where we want to go. You could also share it with your followers too (or me @creativewilderness) or spend a few moments thinking about why each element is important to you.
6. give yourself a daily reminder
Finally, place your board in a place you will see it daily. You can frame it or stick it somewhere. I also save mine as my desktop and phone screensaver. That daily reminder is a powerful motivator to help you reach those dreams and make sure your day is set up to honour them.
